Task #2 "the day I got really misunderstood"

Last summer, I was visiting Paris with a Friend. One noon, after visiting one museum, we were hungry, but all the restaurants’ terraces were full of people. We finally found a burger restaurant not to crowd. We entered in the restaurant, and, as we do not speak French, we ordered in English “two hamburgers, one with extra cheese” to a not very friendly waitress. After that, we sat in the terrace and wait until a small device in the table told us that the hamburgers were ready. Then, I entered in the restaurant and took two of the hamburgers in the bar. I paid the bill, the waitress did not give me any ticket and it was a little bit expensive, but I just thought “we are in Paris”.

We started to eat, and my friend was a little bit annoyed because his hamburger did not have extra cheese. When he realized about that he already had bitten the hamburger and taking in account that the waitress was not very friendly we preferred not to say anything. When we were almost done the waitress came to our table asking about the client who asked for a hamburger with extra cheese, because it had been in the bar for almost half an hour, and nobody took it. We told her that we ordered two burgers and maybe we took the one corresponding to another client. But she said, no, you paid for three, “two normal hamburgers and another one with extra cheese”. At that point, although we were not hungry anymore, we decided to take the extra burger because we already have paid for it. My friend ate it later that night for dinner.

That day we spent all the afternoon talking about how what we literally said: “two hamburgers, one with extra cheese” could be misunderstood and converted in “three hamburgers”. And how you can make more specific such a simple sentence. We did not get any conclusion that did not imply to talk to waiters with very long and too detailed orders. Therefore, next time I order in a foreign country I will always check the ticket.
